knee deep in the water somewhere• • • • • • • • • • • • dougie was used to sitting alone on the beach but there was something about the quiet shore that made him feel extraordinarily lonely. he was sitting, clutching an envelope in his sweaty palms. he came to the beach to read every letter he got from his parents. they had a way of stressing him out all the time, even from hundreds of miles away. he rolled his neck right to left, and left to right as he tried to loosen up then looked down in his hands. he cringed at his mom's perfect handwriting. of course everything about her was perfect. he was always the odd one out when it came to his family. his father tried desperately to recreate himself in dougie but that just never happened. doug was never on the football team, he never got straight A's, and obviously didn't end up at UPenn. the envelope was starting to get flimsy due to him handling it so impatiently. as dougie laid back into the sand, he stuck the letter next to him. maybe if he ignored it, it would just go away.
his morning had already been stressful. he couldn't afford to pay his whole rent last month, so had to pay an extra $200 this month and it wasn't easy. money didn't come easy to him...just like almost every other college student in the universe. he spent money too easily and couldn't make it easy enough. after finally getting his rent paid, he had to figure out how to fix his nearly 10 year old television set because he couldn't afford another technician appointment. doug was quite impressed with himself lately, actually. he'd become a bomb ass techie. he fixed something with his computer going awry and then when the picture on his tv got foggy, he was quick to dissect it and get to the bottom of the problem. then on his way to scour the town for jobs, he checked his mail. and that's when he laid eyes on this little gem from his parents. if only he had walked straight out of his building without bothering to check the mail.
slowly, doug ran his hands through his tousled hair and down his stubbly cheeks. he hadn't shaved in days. in fact, he hadn't really felt like a human for a few days now. he was like a zombie. eat, sleep, class. that's all he did since the letter arrived. why were they even writing him? didn't they know he was finally getting settled in since their last visit? "just read it" dougie mumbled to himself as he pushed himself off of the sand and grabbed the letter and started towards the water.
he ripped the envelope open in a quick movement, and let it fall beside him as he opened the letter. as he unfolded the tri-folded piece of paper, something fell out. "the fuck..?" dougie looked down and saw a $100 bill next to his right foot, resting on the sand. sending me money, because i'm obviously incapable of making money on my own. thanks mom and dad he thought to himself as he leaned over and picked it up. not bothering to brush it off, he shoved it in the back pocket of his ill-fitting khaki pants as his eyes met the typed letter. he glanced over it quickly, not paying attention to what it said. he didn't really care what they had to say, anyways.
dougie crumpled up the note and tossed it into the ocean. he scanned the beach for anyone watching him..some people got mad at the litter bugs on the beach. it was strangely quiet though, and it seemed that no one was paying attention to his movements however for the first time all morning, he didn't feel so alone.

[ Lina loved the welcoming feel of the warm sun on her skin and the salty mist spraying her tanned skin. Everything about the beach today was inviting, especially after then teen had spent her morning hours running around town to pay bills, shop for groceries and shipping a birthday gift to her mother. As far as the magenta haired girl was concerned, she had earned the rest of the day dedicated to relaxation and peace. No doubt she would have to block out the screaming kids and obnoxious college boys with music or something of the like. Then again...obnoxious college boys weren't so bad for a lonely 18 year old girl in a cute bikini and white sun dress. Really, any company over the age of 17 would be decent to her. She couldn't deny that having company around made her happy. Lina could easily get along with most people and those she didn't get along with were easily ignored --most of the time.
As her dark eyes combed the beach looking for an unoccupied patch of sand --cute guy there, annoying 13 year old here, dog with a Frisbee in the water-- Lina found herself nearly tripping over someone who had already found their resting spot. Luckily, she'd only just kicked a bit of sand on them and was able to get away with a muttered apology and an embarrassed scrambling away while her cheeks transformed from their normally tanned color to a shade that nearly matched the color of her hair. Seeming for the most part to be unphased, Alina continued to wander and search for a spot.
It wasn't long until she tripped again, only this time is was less of kicking sand and more of kicking an actual person. Immediately Lina was on her knees sputtering out apologies and asking if the young man she'd bumped into was alright. In actuality, she hadn't run into him nearly as hard as she'd thought but Lina was a little dramatic and theatrical. Her dark eyes scanned her victim up and down, getting a full image of him. He was a bit older than her, certainly cute, with dark hair and a gorgeous set of eyes. "I'm so insanely sorry. Did I hurt you? Dammit, I'm seriously like the hugest klutz ever. Why don't I ever watch where I'm going? I'm really sorry! My name's Lina by the way.." she continued, watching the facial expressions of the young man who had originally seemed a bit surprised by her sudden presence. She blushed lightly, for the second time in a five minute period. Obviously, this was not her day. "If you're hurt I can drive you to the hospital or something.." Lina added quickly, forcing herself to shut the hell up before she really got on his nerves. And to think, the poor guy had probably come here after a long morning just like her, wanting to relax and forget life for a day. Leave it Lina to cause an accident or a scene and ruin that plan. words --- 511 tagged --- dougie outfit --- here! template --- PANIC! knee deep in the water somewhere• • • • • • • • • • • • dougie stumbled sideways as he was hit straight on by a petite girl who he had failed to notice while scanning the beach earlier. he was startled at first by her hair then secondly by her apology. most people around hawaii were self absorbed and really not sorry about…anything. doug eyed her up and down, taking into account that she did look a fair amount younger than himself. i'm so insanely sorry. did i hurt you? dammit, i'm seriously like the hugest klutz ever. why don't I ever watch where i'm going? i'm really sorry! my name's Lina by the way.. was this chick really introducing herself? dougie couldn't remember a single time he had introduced himself after running into someone. well, maybe this would be an appropriate time to introduce himself? doug was confused by the situation, but tried to be polite. it was the least he could do for the cute girl. "dougie…" was pretty much the only word he could formulate before gaining his balance back. "i mean that's my name. dougie, doug..dj..whatever" he glanced back to the water, hoping his letter and envelope were out of sight. what if she was one of those environmental chicks? unfortunately, the envelope was stuck in the sand a few feet away and the letter was slowly following the waves in and out from the shore.
"and uh, no, i'm fine. i doubt your eighty pound body could harm my rock solid frame." dougie chuckled at his own joke. he was anything but rock and pretty much anything but solid.
this was so typical of his morning. what was going to happen next? was this sunny day suddenly going to cloud over and start pouring on them? was he going to be a witness of a crime? held at gunpoint? run over by an eighteen wheeler? stop being dramatic doug told himself as he continued to eye the girl. that wasn't a natural hair color, was it? he honestly couldn't keep track of girls these days. they were always dressing differently, doing something with their hair, wearing skimpy bikinis especially here in hawaii, and were just all around totally not understandable in the least bit. if you're hurt i can drive you to the hospital or something.. the hospital? did he really look THAT weak? mental note to self, hit the god damn gym doug "i…don't think i need a hospital. they do have really good coffee there though. surprising. most people would assume hospital coffee, among other hospital things, are not up to par with let's say…starbucks. i find it to be quite the opposite. underrated stuff is usually better. like me. you'll underestimate me, but i'm pretty fucking bomb." dougie was rambling, which wasn't something new for him. but tooting his own horn? not something he usually did. maybe the day was starting to turn around.
comments • oh hi! i'm kaye, nice to meet you :) stunning attempt, btw. i had no idea where anyone was going to go with this, honestly. oopsie poopsie.

[ Doug's a cool name. Lina thought absently. Mature, strong. He probably thinks I'm a damn idiot though.. The small girl laughed a bit at his joke. 80 pounds eh? Well at least she looked thin, and that was always a plus. A small smile formed on her thin lips and for the first time since she'd collided into him and started rambling, Alina's mahogany eyes met with his. Damn they were gorgeous. "I…don't think i need a hospital. They do have really good coffee there though. Surprising. most people would assume hospital coffee, among other hospital things, are not up to par with let's say…Starbucks. I find it to be quite the opposite. Underrated stuff is usually better. Like me. You'll underestimate me, but I'm pretty fucking bomb." he spoke easily to her.
Confident too. she mused to herself, her grin still playing on her lips. "Well, maybe it's you who underestimates me, Dougie." she tried, testing his name out for the first time. It sounded nice out loud, so she continued with it. "I may appear to be 80 pounds, but in fact I might be 700 so I could have injured you and could have had to take you to the hospital where we might get some of that coffee --which by the way I'm making it my mission to try." Lina finished, trying to lighten things like he had. She still had the feeling that she had disturbed him but then again, it was hard not to feel that way after crashing right into them. But it wouldn't have been the first time she'd made a scene like this. The scarlet haired girl had nearly done it to another innocent beach goer before she'd run into Doug.
Poor guy, he was now stuck with her for a little while because as awkward as the situation may have been, Lina wasn't going to let it just float away without trying to befriend him. It was simply her nature and after all those eyes...Lina found herself looking at them again, or rather, staring. At this point, she wasn't exactly earning herself any cool points by ogling like the teenager she was. But she couldn't help herself, and she couldn't help but hope he wasn't thinking she was too incredibly childish. But of course, she kind of was. After a moment she looked away again, catching glimpse of a piece of waded up paper not too far from them. Her eyebrows furrowed, not really from annoyance at the litter --she couldn't have cared less about that-- but more from curiosity at what it was. A small hmm escaped her as she eyed it carefully. The water was pulling it away from them so there wasn't much point in fishing after it. Whatever words were on it would have been washed off or smudged by now. But Lina couldn't help but voice her curiosities. "What do you think is on that paper wad over there?" she asked, making herself more comfortable in the sand and pulling her shades off her nose to get a better view of everything around her. words --- 521 tagged --- dougie outfit --- here! template --- PANIC! ITS LAUZ @ CAUTION notes --- : D I'm glad my attempt was approved. Nice to meet you Kaye. knee deep in the water somewhere• • • • • • • • • • • • she just had to be one of those girls who was going to try to befriend him before they parted ways. didn't she? doug tried to hide his annoyance by slapping a grin on his lips and raising an eyebrow at her as she spoke. "well maybe it's you who underestimates me, dougie" a chuckle escaped his lips and he shook his head in disappointment. "don't even start with me, lina. i don't do much underestimating. i don't do any estimating to begin with, actually. or, at least i try not to…" the words flew out of dougie's mouth before he really had much time to filter them. that happened to him a lot. he was always throwing out sarcastic remarks that people usually didn't care for. his filter was limited. maybe it was growing up with his strict parents, he always did have a little rebel in him. of course nothing serious -- he never got in trouble at school or anything, but he pushed the envelope when it came to things like curfew…and had his fair share of drug experimentation. curfew and drugs..like every other high school student doug followed his train of thought before he realized how sidetracked he was getting.
literally shaking himself back to reality, doug took a step sideways towards the water. the way he moved was awkward yet swift, like he knew where he was going but didn't know how to get there. "i may appear to be 80 pounds, but in fact i might be 700 so i could have injured you and could have had to take you to the hospital where we might get some of that coffee --which by the way i'm making it my mission to try." dougie listened intently and he noticed that there was something very soothing about the way the teenager spoke. maybe it was her intonation, or pronunciation…it was something though. and it wasn't the only thing about the girl that sparked interest in him. her eyes seemed to dance as she spoke, like she had passion for whatever she was talking about. what was she talking about anyways? dougie wasn't paying much attention but rather watching how animated she was. he found people like her amusing..spending time with them was like being at a circus; you knew things would never get boring.
he noticed that she kept gazing into his eyes..something most people did. there must be something he missed every time he looked in the mirror. to him, his reflection was just some odd looking kid, nothing special but not substantially deformed or anything noticeable. he was a little crooked, his smile dipped to the left side a little bit and if you studied his face close enough you would see that the whole left side dipped about a millimeter beneath his right features. it was something his chiropractor informed him of. his whole body was actually a bit crooked..something about how he was born or whatever. "what do you think is on that paper wad over there? her inquisitive tone sharply interrupted dougie's (once again) wandering mind. "wouldn't you like to know?" dougie shrugged. he was supposed to know what was on it, but was too careless to give a shit what his parents had to say. "maybe it's a note from some stuck up parents on the east coast writing their failure of a son with some pity money thrown in the mix" his tone was sharp, and almost bitter. he caught himself before he could say anymore, though. "just an idea. i don't know. what do you think is on it?"

[ "don't even start with me, lina. i don't do much underestimating. i don't do any estimating to begin with, actually. or, at least i try not to…" his words seemed a bit, well, off impulse and unrestricted and the brown eyed Lina couldn't help but mentally note how very much she was just that way as well. She'd never been very good at saying what people wanted to hear rather than whatever popped into her mind as a first response. Her mother had always said it would be her downfall, and maybe the older female tucker was right about that, but Lina was stubborn and refused to believe it. If she let herself think that speaking her mind was wrong then she wouldn't have been nearly as lively as she was. Before thinking through her words, Alina let her mouth run itself. "Why don't you do any estimating? Don't you want to try and figure out what to expect from a person before you actually get to know them? When I was a kid I played this game where you would pick a random stranger and make up a story about them based solely on appearance. Actually...that sounds kind of shallow now..." Alina trailed off, catching herself in another ramble. It was a wonder to her how the boy was putting up with her obvious immaturity. "Forget it. What would you estimate about me based only on the amount of knowledge you have from me right now?" she finished, her grin ever present.
As they sat, Lina's chocolate eyes fell onto the water, watching it pull and tug in the crumpled paper. She liked watching, for some reason, seeing it control the paper so easily. It had never really occurred to the girl how powerful the ocean really was. Then again, it should have after all those high school biology lessons on life beneath the surface and documentaries that frightened other students with tales of how the water could be heavy enough at some point to crush a human body and kill them. That thought made her shudder in the heat. Death by super magnificent ocean waters? Not really her cup of tea. If it had been up to Lina, she'd have died in some freak accident involving a clown, a bounce house and a cliff. But that was only if she could have it her way, and even that sounded unappealing to her sometimes. "wouldn't you like to know?" Dougie's sudden words brought the teen back from her trance, causing Lina to jump a bit as he continued about some snobby parents sending money to their failure son. His idea was highly probable, but she couldn't see anyone in sight who looked like a failure son with a bunch of cash from his parents so she decided his idea wasn't right.
Turning her body to face Dougie more head on, Alina let her mind get to work on what the soaking piece of paper that was being taken hostage by the watery paradise before them could possibly have been. "What if," she began thoughtfully, "it's a paper from someone's landlord telling them that they have to evacuate their house or apartment or whatever now because the resident has been coming in too late after their excessive partying and causing a disturbance to sleeping neighbors? Wouldn't that be a really shitty reason to get kicked out? Or maybe it's just a failed sketch from some artist trying to capture the perfect beach scene today." The truth was that she had no clue and making up some bogus story seemed more fun than saying that she didn't know. words --- 607 tagged --- dougie outfit --- here! template --- PANIC!
